Natural, grass-fed beef has been a tradition at Sylvan Dale Ranch since the 1960's when Maurice and Mayme Jessup bought their first herd of Charolais cattle. In the years that followed, they developed a breeding program of registered European bulls, most recently Saler and Gelbvieh, resulting in a unique herd well suited to the grasslands of our Rocky Mountain foothills. Calving takes place on the main ranch in March and April and cow-calf pairs are then turned out to range throughout the Summer months returning in the Fall to the main ranch for weaning.
Our herd grazes on Ranch lands protected by perpetual conservation easements. The ecological condition of these easements is monitored annually by Legacy Land Trust and Larimer County Parks and Open Lands. We manage the ecological balance of vegetation through rotational grazing by moving cattle through a series of enclosures. This allows for intensive grazing and fertilization which stimulates re-growth and provides forage that is higher in nutritional value. We also have a grazing allotment on the National forest. Grazing helps prevent the build-up of fuels on the forest floor and thus reduces the risk of wildfire.
